On 14 June, we gathered with many Progressive Mayors in Brussels to find answers to this question: how can we make the most of public space in our cities? Nantes, Bremen, Paris, Valencia, Rennes, Mannheim, Florence, Tirana and many other Progressive cities have successfully implemented local measures to address the challenges cities face today, including pollution, congestion, urban sprawl, social exclusion, stress and criminality, which hamper the socio-economic well-being of Europeans.
We also met with the leaders of Leuven, Budapest and Milan to discuss steps they’re taking to reclaim public spaces that have been inaccessible to citizens for far too long. The time has come to make our cities safer, more resilient and more ecological, and to create a sense of belonging for our citizens and let the people be the protagonists of this shift. The PES Group meeting on Wednesday 14 June gave some insights on transforming public spaces, promoting green mobility and sustainable and affordable housing.
Have a look at the key takeaways featured in the Living Cities newsletter by POLITICO Europe.

What’s coming next?
✊ Organise a summer camp for Ukrainian kids!
As Social democrats, we feel that it's a priority to help the Ukrainian children to find peace at least for a certain period of time and to remind them how "normal" life could feel like. We encourage cities and regions from all over Europe to join! Every small action can make a big difference. Fill in this survey prepared by the European Committee of the Regions and the Association of Ukrainian cities.
👋 See you soon!
We will be back in September with fresh energy and loads of ideas! In the meantime, be ready for summer reads, funky playlists and podcasts on our social media channels.
