🌻 Progress grows where you live l Your PES Group newsletter

As spring begins across Europe, it brings a renewed sense of momentum and possibility. In our cities and regions, that energy is taking shape through progressive leadership from defending democracy to building fairer, greener communities. This edition highlights how local action is turning fresh ideas into real change where it matters most: in people’s daily lives.👇👇👇
📢 Last call to apply to the Young Elected Politicians programme
Applications are now open for the 2026 Young Elected Politicians (YEP) Programme of the European Committee of the Regions! This is a unique opportunity for young elected local and regional politicians under 35 to bring their voice to the European level, gain first-hand experience of EU policymaking, and connect with a dynamic network of peers and decision-makers from across Europe. 👉 Apply by 17 April 2026.

📖 Our streets tell a story!
It is time to feminise, decolonise and fundamentally rethink our streets. On this International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, we walked through the streets of Brussels with our young elected politician Stephanie Ngongo. Too often, public spaces continue to celebrate violent historical figures rooted in racism and sexism, while the contributions of diverse communities remain invisible. Rethinking our streets is a concrete call to action to recognise erased histories and ensure public space truly reflects everyone who belongs to it.
🌹🙏 Many French cities stay left!
Nearly 800 towns and cities across France chose progress, clearly and confidently. From Paris to Marseille, Lille to Montpellier, voters backed leaders who deliver: affordable homes, strong public services, greener streets and fairer communities. This isn’t a trend: it’s a mandate. People see that progressive leadership improves daily life, and they want more of it.

🗳️ Italy says NO to attacks on the rule of law!
Italy’s regions overwhelmingly rejected the right-wing attack on the rule of law in the 22–23 March justice referendum. Despite a complex reform and strong populist campaigning, a broad mobilisation of progressive leaders helped deliver a clear message: no to the law of the strongest, no to undermining the separation of powers, and no to political control over justice.

Catalonia promotes cycling: €190 Million investment to transform daily commutes
The region of Catalonia in Spain, led by Salvador Illa i Roca, is rolling out an ambitious plan to make cycling a core part of daily life. Over the next four years, the government will invest €190 million to build 500 km of new bike lanes and a network of secure parking facilities at train stations. The strategy aims to tackle safety concerns, theft, and connectivity gaps, making cycling a viable option for commuting, not just leisure.

Young leadership in action: free sanitary products in Jesi
Kudos to our YEP member Giacomo Mosca for his outstanding work in Jesi, Italy! Thanks to his dedication, the Municipal Council has approved the installation of free sanitary product dispensers in public buildings, making essential hygiene products accessible to all. This initiative is a shining example of how young leaders can drive real change in their communities.
